Meet a Mom: Shailza | Hudson County Moms

How many children do you have and what are their age(s)?
I am a blessed mom to two munchkins – an almost 4 year old girl and 2 year old son.

How long have you lived in Hudson County? What made you decide to live here?
When I first moved to NJ, I chose to live in central NJ but worked in Hudson County. After kids, around 2017,we decided to move closer to my workplace so that I don’t have to commute and spend more time with kids instead. However, it captured our hearts with its beautiful waterfronts, lively downtowns, easy access to city and not to mention the amazing community through and through.

What’s your favorite family activity in Hudson County?
I feel the beauty of Hudson County shines through in spring and summer. Our family absolutely loves the evening and late night strolls on the Weehawken and Hoboken waterfront, and enjoyed going to splash parks (pre-pandemic) that our city built in community parks. We look forward to summer picnics-especially July 4th fireworks in LSP, Hoboken fests and movies in the park every year.

In winters or when the weather is not so nice, we like to visit Liberty Science Center to indulge the curious minds.

Where’s your favorite place to eat and/or shop in your town?
Its so hard to choose one or even few, because there are so many unique places in my neighbouring towns. We are mostly an order-in or take out vegetarian family so we appreciate a good Thai and Indian food place around us.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Two things actually – One, I wanted to be an airforce pilot for my country and cleared the exams too. However when I got the joining it was for a technical role. I came to learn late that women were not allowed to be pilots, so I changed careers.

Second, I met my husband via a matrimonial site (its like dating site but people are looking to get married) and within 2 weeks we were engaged and have been happily married for 6 years and going strong.

What are you doing to stay sane during Covid for yourself?
I have learned to lower my expectations, from working from home to running the household. We try to go out at least for an hour everyday-weather permitting and with all safety measures.

Any tips or recommendations for parents to entertain/educate their children during this time?
It’s really hard when both parents are working or wfh and kids are home. We try to schedule our meetings so that at least one parent is with kids and actively engaging them. Lots of play-doh, paintings, pretend play toys, my daughter especially loves mazes and puzzles books. We also try to be little flexible and realistic around screen time

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

My mom and other amazing mama friends I met in the community, online and at work. They have been key in making motherhood a pleasure than a challenge.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!
I am a very ambitious person by nature. I have a full time corporate job with an investment bank and my creative outlet

where I share snippets of my mind, my life and my parenting journey.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
I am extremely thankful for how family oriented my community is. It has been instrumental to make us feel at home from Day 1. I am truly blessed to have made so many amazing mama friends who are starting their families like us and have similar struggles. There are so many family friendly places, events, well stocked libraries, indoor play places, some of the best daycares and I can go on and on.
